For over a hundred minutes, Bell South has been the South’s most dependable name in tone generation, copper stewardship, and the gentle hum you hear when you pick up the receiver and forget who you were calling. From the swamps of the panhandle to the better-paved parts of Atlanta, our network reaches approximately everywhere a pole could be reasonably installed.

About Bell South

Bell South Corporation was founded on a simple principle: that two people, separated by distance, should be able to speak to one another and then receive a bill for having done so. From that humble idea grew a regional telecommunications enterprise spanning nine states, four area codes, and an unknowable quantity of underground wiring.

Our Mission

To deliver a clear, consistent dial tone to every household in the South, and to be respectfully evasive about the static. We believe communication is a human right, narrowly defined, and reasonably priced after the first three months.

Our Heritage

We were here before the Internet, during the Internet, and we fully intend to be here after the Internet is over. Our linemen know your neighborhoods. Our operators know your mother. Our hold music was composed in-house and has been described by a former employee as “present.”

Our Ownership

Bell South is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pacheco Heavy Industries, the diversified conglomerate behind girders, ground-penetrating machinery, and now, telecommunications. We are honored to carry copper on behalf of a company that usually carries much heavier things. Learn more at pache.co.

Our Services

Bell South offers a complete portfolio of voice and data services, each engineered to work most of the time. Whether you are placing a call across town or across the county line (additional charges apply), our network is standing by, humming faintly.

Service	Description
Local Calling	Reach anyone within a generous radius of yourself. The dial tone is included at no extra charge during this limited-time forever.
Long Distance	Speak to people who are far away. Rates are lowest after 11:00 PM, when nobody you wish to speak to is awake.
Bell South DSL	Always-on Internet that does not require you to hang up the phone. A genuine miracle, available in select neighborhoods with the correct soil.
Voice Mail	A small machine, located somewhere, that holds messages for you until you remember the four-digit code, which you will not.
Caller ID	Know who is calling before you decide to ignore them. Now compatible with most rectangular phones.

Installation: A friendly Bell South technician will arrive sometime between 8:00 AM and the heat death of the afternoon. Please remain home and alert.

Beyond service, Bell South proudly manufactures and leases a range of durable telecommunications hardware, much of it beige, all of it heavier than you expect — a quality we inherit honestly from our parent company.

The Model 700 Desk Telephone	A telephone in the shape of a telephone. Available in Beige, Warm Beige, and Office Beige. Cord sold separately, then connected permanently.
The Answering Machine	Captures the voices of people who called while you were out, on a tape you will rewind exactly once.
56k Dial-Up Modem	Connect to the World Wide Web at speeds approaching 56k under laboratory conditions. Includes the song.
The Cordless Phone	Walk up to forty feet from the base before the call dissolves into the static of freedom.
Bell South Pager	Receive numbers. Wonder about them. A complete communication experience for the on-the-go professional.

All hardware is leased, never owned, and remains the eternal property of Bell South and, by extension, Pacheco Heavy Industries.

Board of Directors

Bell South is governed by a distinguished Board of Directors drawn from the upper echelons of Southern industry, each bringing decades of experience to bear on the pressing questions of regional telephony.

John L. Clendenin

Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, 1983–1996

The chief executive architect of BellSouth who served as Chairman and CEO from 1983 through 1996. He was highly prominent in the national business landscape, guiding the company through its transition into the digital era.

F. Duane Ackerman

Chairman & Chief Executive Officer

Appointed to the board as Vice Chairman in 1995, he succeeded Clendenin to become CEO in 1997 and Chairman in 1998. He was one of the most powerful corporate figures in the Southeast, eventually negotiating BellSouth’s landmark $67 billion merger with AT&T.

James P. Kelly

Chairman & CEO, United Parcel Service (1997–2002)

The corporate leader who served as the Chairman and CEO of United Parcel Service (UPS) from 1997 to 2002. He joined the board during a time when UPS was significantly expanding its global logistics presence.

Leo F. Mullin

Chairman & CEO, Delta Air Lines (1997–2004)

A titan in the aviation industry who was the Chairman and CEO of Delta Air Lines from 1997 to 2004. His presence bridged the leadership of two of Atlanta’s largest corporate heavyweights.

John G. Medlin Jr.

CEO & Chairman, Wachovia Corporation (1977–1993)

A highly respected titan of Southern banking who served as the longtime CEO and Chairman of Wachovia Corporation from 1977 to 1993.

Jere A. Drummond

Vice Chairman, BellSouth

A veteran telecom executive who served on the board and rose to become the Vice Chairman of BellSouth. He was a leading voice in national telecom infrastructure development.

Frank Pacheco

President, Pacheco Heavy Industries

As President of our parent company, Pacheco Heavy Industries, Mr. Pacheco brings to the Board the discipline of a man accustomed to moving objects far heavier than a telephone.
